Would finishing 4th be a bigger achievement than the 85/86 season?
Another great win today!
Still can’t see it happening but they keep proving me wrong.

I think considering the amount of Injuries we have and also the financial advantage that some clubs have for expensive players and big squads that wasn’t so prevalent in the 80s before the Premier league, I think if we finished 4th it would be a bigger achievement than the 85/85 season.

You’re thoughts?

no. If Alvin doesn't get went off at Arsenal, and we beat Chelsea at home we were champions. this season has been great but we're still almost twenty points behind City

Re: Would finishing 4th be a bigger achievement than the 85/86 season?
Yep during a time when there was not a lot of financial difference between the big 5 or 6 clubs and the rest of the top division like there is now.

West Ham, Coventry & Wimbledon all won the FA Cup in the 80s. Luton, Norwich & Oxford all won the League Cup in the 80s.

How many of those size of clubs win Cups now?

The big clubs didn’t have the huge squads that they do now.

We had hardly any injuries in 85/86.

We could finish 3rd again . Pretty sure we finished 16th the season before 85/86 as well

Plus we were consistently winning games in style that season, some would say the best team that year. 26 wins and a plus 34 goal difference, although if we stay unbeaten this year, a tough ask, it would be close.

84 points from 42 games, massive goal difference and could, should have won it. This is a fantastic achievement though in a different era.

Probably would. The huge advantage of the endless cash the main clubs today is impossible to overlook. With the exception being what Ranieri did with Leicester.

However, Jenny No Knickers would probably win the league if she was managing City.

No, if dalglish hadn’t nicked a winner for the scouse at Chelsea, we’d have gone into the last match knowing a win would make us champions

easier to finish in the top four in the Eighties

Villa, Ipswich, Southampton, Forest, West Brom, Norwich and Watford all did it
.

It would be a huge achievement and hopefully as I said earlier, the end of gentleman's nights with fuxking tony gale.

This season is about as good as we have ever been consistency wise and competitively

Forest, Ipswich & Villa all won European Trophies as well....they were part of the BIG clubs back then.

4th now is the bigger achievement. The gulf in money and resources between the the haves and have nots is now massive.

Bigger? Possibly.

More important for the fans? Almost certainly.

All those who missed out on Europe after 85/86 can join all those going to Europe (hopefully) after 20/21.

It's a big achievement, but surprised no-one's mentioned the massive part COVID has had to play, especially how marked the difference was in our results pre and post lockdown.

This season's probably too much of an anomaly to compare with 86 or any other year really.

Is there a point when we are guaranteed Europe league?

Had a season ticket back in 86 but when I see that pavement outside the O/s with the names on it do think it's to much..miles to much.
Moyes man management this season has been outstanding .
